Where do you start with interior design?

With many processes, the hardest part is actually getting started, and that’s no different when it comes to interior design. You may have a broad idea of what you want your home to look like, but putting that idea together with all the separate parts can seem a little daunting.

To help you on your minimalist interior design journey you can explore sites like ivyhome.com which helps to put together some ideas on areas that you can get started on.. From window coverings to a simple coat of paint, it’s really not that hard once you get into it.

Choose an aesthetic

While you might have a lot of different ideas about objects and colours that you want to have present in your home, it’s important that they all go well together. The easiest way to ensure this is to pick a specific aesthetic – preferably before you even get started with the rest.

Of course, if you want something a little more original, you can try mixing modern furniture with old fashion pelmets and rugs. It just might take a little trial and error before you get things right.

Painting

While there’s no right or wrong place to begin, a lot of interior designers say that you should start by choosing a wall colour. While colour charts are a good place to start, they don’t really tell you what the room will look like in that shade.

You can get tester pots, with enough paint to cover just a square metre or so of the wall. Then, you can see what the colour will look like in that space, in that specific light, and decide if you want to paint the whole room in that manner.

If you choose to do it yourself, it can be a fun experience. Just remember to remove as much furniture as possible, and cover anything that needs to remain with dust sheets.

Rugs

Rugs can be another amazing place to start with interior design. Like painting, they frame the rest of the items that you place in a room. Rugs are also handy in that, unlike carpets, if you don’t like them where they are, you can simply move them somewhere else.

Window coverings

Something that’s often overlooked, but is incredibly important both practically and aesthetically, is how you choose to cover your windows. There are a number of style choices to make that will have to match the rest of the interior design aesthetic you’ve gone for – often though, we recommend going with curtains.

While you can go to physical showrooms, it’s often a lot more efficient to use online stores such as Woodyatt Curtains. They have a broader range than most physical shops, and can often offer their products at a lower price, as they don’t have to pay for a physical shop.

Ultimately, what matters is that you just get started. These are a few tips on potential ideas, but whatever you do, once you get the ball rolling, the process will become a lot easier.
