Dedicated physician, sports enthusiast, and Floridian by choice, Dr. Ian Weisberg is a distinguished cardiac electrophysiologist. Growing up in Dallas, Dr. Weisberg participated in three sports and was named to the All Southwest team in soccer. His sophomore year at The Greenhill School, his tennis team captured the National Championship at Duke University.
As an undergraduate student, Weisberg earned his Phi Beta Kappa key at Emory. After graduating from college, he studied at the Institute of Italian Studies in Florence and at the London School of Economics. He returned to Emory for medical school, and then did his residency in cardiac electrophysiology back in Dallas at UT Southwestern’s Parkland Memorial Hospital, followed by a year as Chief Cardiology Fellow at the University of Florida in Jacksonville. Finally, Weisman completed a residence in cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Chicago.
But what is a cardiac electrophysiologist, exactly?
A cardiac electrophysiologist is a specialized cardiologist, focused on the heart’s electrical system. This kind of heart surgeon connects (and sometimes disconnects) the heart from advanced electronic devices that keep the heart’s rhythm stable.
Your electrophysiologist treats issues related to heart rhythm such as:
- Atrial fibrillation, more commonly called a-fib.
- Atrial flutter.
- Atrial tachycardia.
- Heart block.
- Long QT syndrome.
- Premature atrial contractions.
- Premature ventricular contractions.
- Sick sinus syndrome.
- Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
- Ventricular fibrillation.
- Ventricular tachycardia.
- Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
Your cardiac electrophysiologist does procedures such as:
- Computed tomography (CT).
- Electrocardiogram (EKG).
- Electrophysiology study.
- Event monitoring.
- Heart MRI.
- Holter monitor.
- Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE).
- Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE).
These tests may indicate the need for certain kinds of pacing procedures. The kinds of procedures Dr. Ian Weisberg does on a regular basis include:
- Complex ablation procedures for atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachyarrhythmias, and ventricular tachycardia.
- Implantation of pacemakers, defibrillators, ICDs, and CRT devices.
- Watchman LAAO implantation.
Dr. Weisman is a cardiologist of multiple competencies. But he is also a doctor who cares.
Dr. Weisman has been recognized twice as the We Care Doctor of the Year in Escambia County. He was among the very first doctors in the country to offer patients the Biotronix implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), helping vulnerable Escambia County residents live longer, healthier lives. (The Biotronix implantable cardioverter-defibrillator delivers electrical impulses and shocks through leads to terminate tachycardias and fibrillation, allowing the heart to restart its activity in a normal rhythm) He also directed the construction and launching of coronary pacing labs at Gulf Breeze Hospital and North Okaloosa Medical Center/
Ian Weisman is an exemplary cardiac electrophysiologist, but he leads a full life.
He’s a proud dad. He still works out, and plays golf and tennis for fun. He enjoys weekend bicycle outings. He’s a voracious reader of Dan Brown, Fyodor Dostyevsky, John Grisham, and has a particular fondness for reruns of movies starring Al Pacino.
Your cardiac electrophysiologist brings a unique combination of medical skills and knowledge to your treatment. But as your doctor, Dr. Ian Weisberg can show you how much he cares because he loves his family, and he loves his life.
