Natural fancy coloured diamonds are very rare and exclusive. In fact, they are rarer than the colourless diamond that are so highly valued.
A natural coloured diamond is simply a gift of nature, because the probability of finding
coloured diamonds in their natural state is very rare. They can be found in a variety of colours from yellow diamonds to pink, blue, red and brown. But only one in every 10,000 diamonds gets this natural colour.
Therefore, collectors and buyers across the world have started investing in these beautiful gems for the intensity and distribution of colour in them.
I see yellow!
Of these, yellow diamonds have become one of the most adaptive jewellery trends in this decade. One reason for this surge in their popularity is some famous celebrities flaunting their yellow diamond rings and yellow diamond jewellery.
But often new buyers want to know if yellow coloured diamonds are actually real?
Absolutely! They are 100% real and the yellow hue is a result of some Nitrogen traces in the mix. Like all other natural diamonds, the yellow ones too are formed after zillions of years.
Interestingly, yellow diamonds are the only ones that have a variety of nicknames awarded to them. Many call them Canary Yellow Diamonds, while some refer to them as Zimmy.
But there is a difference between the two:
The canary yellow diamond refers to only a yellow stone with the highest, richest colour intensity)fancy intense yellow or fancy vivid yellow).
Whereas, the Zimmy was originally used for the extraordinary vivid yellow diamonds that originated from the Zimmy mine located in Sierra Leone. Somehow, the shine and intensity of the Zimmy stones make the other yellow diamonds pale in comparison.
Mining of yellow diamonds
Of all the fancy coloured diamonds, yellow diamonds happen to be the ones that are more commonly found. Yellow diamonds are found in various mines across the world but more prominently in Australia, Central Africa, Angola, Borneo, Brazil, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone.
Pricing of yellow diamonds
While coloured diamonds are more expensive than the colourless ones, the yellow are somewhat more affordable and cost less than colourless diamonds of the same quality.
This is because the “bottom” category yellow diamonds are also the “bottom” category in the coloured grading scale.
So a diamond that has lighter yellow colouring such as the Fancy Yellow will cost less than a colourless diamond in the same quality. But a Fancy Intense Yellow or Fancy Vivid Yellow still command a better price than the colourless ones.
And because natural fancy coloured diamonds are rare to find, the larger ones will sell at higher price per carat than the white diamonds because of their uniqueness.
Smaller stones, for example 1 carat yellow stone with other qualities similar to a white stone will be less expensive and only if the colour intensity is quite weak.
But fancy intense and fancy vivid colours fetch a higher price per carat than the colourless white diamonds with similar qualities.
So for example, a high quality stone like VS+ and VG/VG polish/symmetry proportion grades, weighing 2-3 carats is very difficult to find and is therefore very expensive.
Certain types of yellow diamonds are great for investment because their value has increased dramatically in the past decade.
Moreover, it’s easier to liquidize diamonds or diamond jewellery, especially coloured ones because of their high popularity.
The demand for yellow diamonds is always high and always more than the supply.
Yellow Coloured Diamond Engagement Rings
Yellow diamond engagement rings are all the rage with brides now because they add a touch of quirkiness and individuality without being unaffordable.
Plus, they retain all the qualities of a diamond – from their brilliance and beauty to their incredible resilience which make them ideal for daily use.
Many people believe that each coloured diamond symbolizes something unique. The bright and vibrant shade of yellow diamonds suggests happiness and optimism. This is an ideal sentiment to celebrate a happy occasion like an engagement.
In conclusion, whether you choose them for their intense colouring or as an investment or to stand out from the crowd, investing in yellow diamonds makes a lot of sense.
