I attended an advanced screening of this film. All opinions are my own.
“This holiday season, Academy Award® winner Robert Zemeckis—the groundbreaking filmmaker behind Forrest Gump, Flight and Cast Away—directs Steve Carell in the most original movie of the year. Welcome to Marwen tells the miraculous true story of one broken man’s fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit.
When a devastating attack shatters Mark Hogancamp (Carell) and wipes away all memories, no one expected recovery. Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation—a testament to the most powerful women he knows—through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one.
In a bold, wondrous and timely film from this revolutionary pioneer of contemporary cinema, Welcome to Marwen shows that when your only weapon is your imagination…you’ll find courage in the most unexpected place.” –©Universal Pictures
When I saw the trailer for the Welcome to Marwen, I was very intrigued by the concept and I loved the cast. After watching the movie, I thought Welcome to Marwen was good.
I thought the storyline was a bit slow and a little repetitive. The movie did have some positive messages about friendship and bravery. I like that the movie was based on the true story of artist Mark Hogancamp.
Visually this movie was fantastic. I loved that much of the movie was told by a ‘doll perspective.’ The look and design of the characters and the town of Marwen was well done. The motion capture performances by the whole cast were great.
This movie is rated PG-13 “for sequences of fantasy violence, some disturbing images, brief suggestive content, thematic material, and language.” This movie definitely deserves it rating. There is a lot of swearing, some nudity, and adult themes such as addiction and hate crimes. I think a lot of the concepts of the movie will be difficult for kids to understand. This movie would be better for adults and older teens.
For the really cool visuals, I think Welcome to Marwen is worth watching. I don’t know if I would watch it again but I did enjoy seeing it.
Welcome to Marwen is now playing in theaters!
