I was invited by Disney on an all expenses paid trip to cover the #HanSoloEvent and #PeterPanBluray. All opinions are my own.
In honor of Peter Pan now available on Digital and on Blu-ray 6/5, I had the chance to visit Disney’s Animation Research Library!
It was truly an honor to be able to tour Disney’s ARL since they do not give tours to the public. Did you know that every single piece of artwork, big and small, is stored and cared for by Disney? Yes, it is. Each piece is carefully placed away so that it will remain in the best quality possible for many generations to come.
At the ARL they are currently making digital files for all of the art (learn more about that below) so that anyone in the Disney company will have access to the artwork without having to make a trip to the ARL.
Having the chance to see the original hand-drawn art from Peter Pan in person was so magical. And they pulled it out of archives just for us!
Here is some of the artwork that we got to view, these images have been provided by the ARL.
During our tour, we got also to see the process they use for archiving all of the Disney paper art into digital files (that is how they make those nifty digital copies I showed you above). They place the art on the table shown below and using a really really great camera (not kidding, I think they said it is like 100 megapixels, our phones have about 12, so yeah) they capture the image in a way that preserves the integrity of the art down to the smallest detail.
Then they showed us how they are cataloged online, and they pulled up this really cool concept art for captain hook. Isn’t it awesome?!
And see how the detail is there even when zoomed way in? That would be thanks to those talented photographers and a great camera.
I had such a great time getting to visit Disney’s Animation Research Library and won’t forget the memories.
