I attended an advance screening for this review. All opinions are my own.
“From Nintendo and Illumination comes a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (collaborators on Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and released worldwide by Universal Pictures.”
We are big Mario fans at my house and my whole family has been very excited to see the new Super Mario Bros. Movie. After viewing the film, I am very excited to take my kids to it. They are going to love it.
This movie was full of all things Mario. There were so many different references for many different games. I loved the animation in the film. It was so bright and colorful. It was very well done. I enjoyed the movie in the film. There are many references to different music from the games, but they also threw in some modern songs into the film. It was a great mix.
I liked the voice cast for the movie. It did take a little to get used to the fact that they do not sound like the game cast. For me, the MVP of the voice cast was Jack Black as Bowser. You could tell that he was having so much fun. Some of the best moments in the film are from Bowser.
I also enjoyed some of the changes to the characterization of the different characters. I love how Peach is portrayed in this movie. She is not a damsel in distress. She is her own hero and fights for herself.
This movie has a very appropriate length. It is only 90 minutes long, perfect length for little kids. I think that this is a movie that the family will have fun seeing together. It may be a little juvenile at times for parents but the young kids are going to love it! There are a couple of fun scenes in the credits. One in the middle and one at the end.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is rated PG “for action and mild violence.” There may be a few scary moments for little kids but overall, I feel like it is appropriate for all members of the family.
I had fun watching The Super Mario Bros. Movie and I know my kids are going to love it!
