I attended an advanced screening of this film. All opinions are my own.
“In this interplanetary adventure, shortly after arriving to help colonize Mars, an astronaut dies while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet – never revealing who the father is. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot – an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing. While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he’s never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl named Tulsa. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, Gardner is eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars. But after his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner’s organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere. Gardner joins with Tulsa on a race against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe.”-©STX Entertainment
I was very intrigued by the trailer for THE SPACE BETWEEN US. I thought it was a very interesting concept for a movie. I also thought that it looked like a cute romance film. I did become concerned when the film’s release date was delayed. After viewing it, THE SPACE BETWEEN US was better than I thought it was going to be.
I really liked the overall storyline for the film. I loved exploring and experiencing the Earth through Gardner, who had never experienced it before. It also led to several of the film’s comedic moments. His experiences also made me appreciate some of the simple things that we take for granted.
One of the disappointments I had with the film was the lack of character development. I wish we would have been able to get to know the characters in more detail and why they are the way they are. I think some of their back stories could and should have been explored more.
I think that the audience that will really enjoy this film is going to be the older teen audience. It is a cute little love story that is perfectly aimed toward them.
THE SPACE BETWEEN US is rated PG-13 “for brief sensuality and language.” This movie was a pretty mellow PG-13 that I definitely think teens would be okay seeing without parent supervision.
Overall, THE SPACE BETWEEN US is perfect for the teen crowds and maybe their moms as well.
THE SPACE BETWEEN US is now playing in theaters.
