The How and The Why
Presented by Theatre Unbound and Hennepin Theatre Trust
“A smart, densely textured work about men and women, love and conflict, genes and destiny… a richly theatrical experience.” —The New York Times
Evolution and emotion collide in the Minnesota debut of The How and the Why, the thought-provoking, sharply humorous play about love, science, family and choices faced by women of all generations. The air crackles between two biologists, maverick graduate student Rachel and eminent Professor Zelda Kahn, who seem to be meeting for the first time. Rachel’s radical new theory challenges Zelda’s award-winning research. As the professional sparring shifts to a deeper, more personal conversation, they discover links and dreams beyond the “How” of Mother Nature and reproduction, and seek to answer the question “Why.” The How and the Why is written by esteemed playwright Sarah Treem, who has helped pen some of the best new shows on television including Showtime’s The Affair, HBO’s In Treatment and Netflix’s House of Cards.
I’ve been living in the Twin Cities area for almost 3 years, and really have not dug into the theatre scene here. And I seriously have no idea why!!?! I had the pleasure of going to see The How and The Why last weekend, and I highly recommend it! And you know what one of the best parts is? It’s super affordable! I guess I always just assumed that a night out at a play was going to be super expensive. Not true! Tickets are $19 each!
The play was great- the acting was spectacular. It’s just a two-person cast, and they were awesome. I could feel the tension and emotions between them. The script is so thought provoking and unique- the story follows two woman as they meet- in a very unconventional way- and how they share ideas about science and about life. We really enjoyed it, and I hope you hop right to Hennepin Theatre Trust’s website, as there are only 5 shows left!!!! Don’t miss out on a great date night or girls night out! The Minneapolis cultural district is so much fun- there are amazing restaurants all over, and its fun to just walk around, especially now that spring is peeking it’s head around the corner!
