“What if everything you love was taken from you in the blink of an eye? “The Host” is the next epic love story from the creator of the “Twilight Saga,” worldwide bestselling author, Stephenie Meyer. When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan) will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about – Jared (Max Irons), Ian (Jake Abel), her brother Jamie (Chandler Canterbury) and her Uncle Jeb (William Hurt) , proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world.”
I am a big fan of the book The Host by Stephenie Meyer. I like it more than the Twilight series. I was so excited that this book was finally made into a film.
I thought that overall, the filmmakers did a pretty good job with this movie. One of the strengths of this movie is that they have a great cast of actors for each of the roles. Saoirse Ronan does a really great job as Melanie/Wanderer in the film. One of the important aspects of the story is that Melanie’s mind and Wanderer’s mind inhabit the same body. I was worried about this struggle being a big distraction in the movie or be really corny. This important part of the story was done very well. My favorite person in the movie was William Hurt as Jeb. He was fantastic and I do not think they could have cast a better person.
One thing though is if you are looking for an intense action movie, this is not one. There are some action scenes but the majority of the movie is more about relationships and character development. I like that it was a more mellow film that focuses more on story and not as much on action.
For fans of the book, there are a lot of things missing from the book in the movie but the central themes and storyline are still there. I did not notice any drastic changes.
I really enjoyed watching The Host and will recommend it to others, especially to those who like the book.
