Having some activities planned for children to do with their grandparents will help them to bond with one another. Children should look forward to seeing their grandparents and have fun with them. If grandparents are receiving nursing home care, then it can be particularly difficult to find things to do. However, depending on their grandparents’ abilities, there are plenty of things that they can enjoy doing together.
Whether you are a grandparent yourself or are looking to organize something for your children, here are some ideas to get you started.
Nature walk
Kids love getting out in the great outdoors, and it is also a good thing to do as we get older. If grandparents are not able to walk, then consider getting assistance and going out in a wheelchair. Wheelchair taxis are available which can take you to parks. This is something which everyone will enjoy.
Puzzles and games
Puzzles and games are a great activity that everyone can enjoy. Plus it will be so nice for grandma to be able to play something besides solitaire for a change. For older children, grandparents might be able to teach them to play chess or more complicated card games. This is a great brain exercise for people of all ages. It will help children as well as adults, who should keep exercising their minds to keep them healthy.
Gardening
Another skill which can be passed on through the generations. It will encourage both children and adults off their phones and outside. Gardening is great for both mental and physical health. Consider growing vegetables. This way, you have something nutritious to eat, and it might even encourage children to eat it if they have helped to grow it.
Baking
Kids love baking cakes! This is an excellent thing for their grandparents to help them with, and it even teaches them some life-long skills.
Reading
Reading to children is great for their imagination. Having books handy that they will enjoy is a great way to bond.
Birdwatching
Whether it be from home or in a local park, birds are everywhere. You can find books that will help them to decipher what bird they are looking at. You can also buy a set of binoculars.
Make it more exciting by making a birdfeeder.
Teach a hobby
Grandparents have lots of excellent skills to pass on. Knitting, fishing, sewing, whatever it is, this is a great way to enjoy each others company. Furthermore, it is a great way to teach children new and exciting skills.
Go out for lunch
Sometimes you can’t beat a café or restaurant for quality bonding time. This might be a good idea if grandparents are in a home. They can be brought out to a local café, and all they have to do is sit and enjoy some different food!
Movie day
Cinema tickets are often reduced for elderly people and children, so they make a great pair to go together!
Reminisce
Children have a lot to learn from elderly people, and they often never get a chance. Showing photos or looking at things online and talking about them can be very enjoyable for both children and their grandparents.
