“Last week, in D.C., the Center for Science in the Public Interest released the results of “Kids’ Meals: Obesity and Poor Nutrition on the Menu,” an investigation into the nutrition quality of the kids’ meals served at the nation’s top 50 chain restaurants.
SUBWAY® restaurants stood out as the only chain to meet CSPI’s criteria – for their entire FRESH FIT™ for KIDS menu.”
I really wasn’t surprised to hear that SUBWAY met the criteria. Most fast food restaurants are super greasy and loaded with fat. But I was shocked when I saw where the worst kids meals are and how many calories are in them at places we visit often (see the link to the article further down).
I have always been a fan of SUBWAY as a fresh option for fast food. I enjoy SUBWAY myself and especially love SUBWAY for my son because it is a healthier option than alternative kids meals. I always get him a sandwich on wheat bread, then apples and milk with his meal. I love that he can eat right even when we eat on the go. And best of all he loves the SUBWAY meals, it is one of his top favorite places to eat.
More about CSPI’s report and the SUBWAY kids menu:
· CSPI found that fried chicken fingers, burgers and French fries continue to dominate the kids’ meals landscape, with 97 percent of the nearly 3,500 meal possibilities not meeting CSPI’s nutrition criteria.
· All of SUBWAY® restaurant’s eight children’s meals, which include a 4” sub, apple slices and low-fat milk or bottled water, amount to less than 430 calories, less than 35% fat, 0 % trans fat, 35% added sugars and 770 mg of sodium, and meet both the expert and industry nutrition standards (CSPI’s and the National Restaurant Association’s Kids LiveWell Nutrition Standards).
· SUBWAY FRESH FIT FOR KIDS™ meals have been approved by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with whom SUBWAY® restaurants has partnered to help fight childhood obesity.
