I attended an advance screening of this film. All opinions are my own.
“SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernays SELMA tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.” (C) Paramount
I have been looking forward to seeing Selma. I thought that the trailers made it look really good. After watching it, I can say that I thought Selma was a fabulous movie. My cousin and I both really enjoyed it.
For me, the main reason that this film is so great is because of the amazing acting. David Oyelowo’s portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is stunning. He really embodies Dr. King. Every person acting in this movie does a fabulous job.
At the end of the movie, it shows actually footage from the Selma march. My cousin and I really liked seeing the actual footage. It also explains what happens to some of the key characters after the Civil Rights movement.
This movie is a pretty violent. It does not ‘sugar coat’ how horribly people were treated during the Civil Rights movement. It still shocks me to this day how people were treated. This movie also uses the ‘f-word’ a couple of times. This is definitely a movie for adults.
I loved Selma and can definitely recommend it!
