The two-piece, hygienic SafeSleep Breathe-Through Crib Mattress includes a crib base and an air permeable firm crib mattress sleep surface. A bed of air is layered between the mattress and base, which allows baby to breathe in oxygen-rich air in case he or she rolls into a face-down position.

Asphyxia occurs when the body (tissue and organs) fails to get the required amount of oxygen due to high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the surrounding air, which leads to hypoxia, a condition associated with SIDS. Infants sleeping on their tummy increases the likelihood of difficulty in breathing. This is because the exhaled CO2 during breathing does not escape and is more concentrated in their bedding material. Most infants will turn their head, but some do not. It is believed these infants have a brain stem abnormality. The problem we face; we do not know which infants will or will not turn their heads to get fresh oxygen, leaving all infants at risk.

Together, they invented the SafeSleep BreatheThrough Crib Mattress. It is a mattress that is both firm and breathe-through. It is truly amazing! I learned a lot on their website about what they believe to be the problem with regular mattress’ and how babies can be breathing in CO2 instead of Oxygen. The Secure Beginnings mattress is made from safe materials that allow for breathability- the bottom portion is a wood box with holes on the sides that keep air flowing throughout. On top there is a mesh-like fabric that rests on top of the box that is breathable and yet a safe, firm surface for sleeping- it’s almost like a hammock, but with the perfect amount of tension with the secure metal bars on each side. Even though back sleeping is still recommended with this mattress, you don’t have to fear your baby rolling over in his crib and then being unsafe- baby will be able to breathe oxygen rich air on his back or tummy thanks to SafeSleep BreatheThrough Crib Mattress! I have to admit that I love that it is not only safe, but aesthetically pleasing as well! It looks great in the crib. The sleep portion is also easy to take off (thank you!) and machine washable, so keeping this clean is a breeze.
