Man filling out a documentation form
There are many documents and procedures you have to complete as an immigrant. Applying for your NIE number is one of them. You can do it yourself or request assistance at https://www.migrun.tech/spain/services-in-spain/virtual-assistance-for-spain – either way, here is everything you need to know about arranging your Número de Identificación de Extranjero.
What is a NIE?
The Número de Identificación de Extranjero, or NIE for short, is an identification number an immigrant receives when staying in Spain. All foreigners arriving there with economic, professional, or other reasons for activity need this code. While Spanish citizens have a Documento Nacional de Identidad, or the DNI, EU and non-EU citizens arrange their NIE. This number does not distaste your fiscal residency, so you can be an immigrant from another country and have a different residency.
The code starts with an X or Y, continues with 7 or 8 digits, and ends with a letter. In Spain, you cannot pay taxes, buy property, start a business, open a bank account, or fill in any papers without your unique NIE code. As a non-EU immigrant, you will need a visa along with the NIE to become a Spanish resident. EU citizens can register without a visa.
Steps to Get a NIE Number
You do not have to go to Spain to get a NIE number. You can either ask for help from Migrun and similar services or apply at the Consular Office of your country of residence. You can arrange the application in person or do it through an accredited representative. Either one should be physically present.
Then, you will have to fill out and print the NIE application form “EX-15” after you receive it from any relevant institution. Remember that the form should be filled out in Spanish. There are many translations of the paper into different languages online, though. Regardless of your location, you should set an appointment at the Police Station or “Oficina de Extranjeros” to receive the code.
Documentation Needed to Apply for a NIE
Before you decide to arrange a NIE code, you need to collect a few documents. In addition to the filled out and printed EX-15 form that states your reasons for application, gather:
- documentary proof that you need a NIE (employment contract, immigration visa, educational institution contact, etc.);
- valid passport or other identity document (original and copy);
- representative’s passport and identity document (original and copy, if a NIE is requested through a representative);
- document proving residence in the Consular area;
- completed form 790, code 12.
During the application, you will also have to pay the NIE appointment fee at the Consular Office. The document will be ready in about three weeks if no emergencies occur during the period. You will receive the NIE code by email.
Ready for Immigration
Once you have your visa and a NIE, you are ready to move to Spain and become a resident! NIE will allow you to get a healthcare package, open a bank account, get a mortgage, and so much more.
