I attended an advanced screening of this film for my review. All opinions are my own.
““Queen of Katwe” is the colorful true story of a young girl selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.”-Disney
I really enjoyed Queen Of Katwe and I thought it was a fantastic movie. It is emotional, both happy and sad and I really felt for this girl as she is trying to achieve her dream as well as her family who is with her along the way.
It was moving to watch and very inspirational. I think the cast did a wonderful job of portraying each character. They had me laughing and crying, and inspired by the end. It is a great story and Disney has told it well in this film.
This is a great movie that the whole family can enjoy. I don’t know if really young kids will be able to stay interested, so for that reason I would say ages 8 and up. Although there is nothing offensive that makes it so you can’t take young kids. Queen of Katwe is rated PG for thematic elements, an accident scene and some suggestive material.
Our reviewer Nicole also saw this movie, here are her thoughts: ”
I thought that QUEEN OF KATWE was a great movie. I loved how inspirational this movie was and that it was based on a real story. I have never really been interested in chess but I liked how QUEEN OF KATWEmade chess exciting. I thought the cast in this movie was excellent. David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o were fantastic in their roles as Robert Katende and Nakku Harriet. I was very impressed with newcomer Madina Nalwanga as the lead role of Phiona.
Although this movie is PG, I do not think it is for younger children. I think this movie will not hold their attention very well. Plus, there are some pretty emotional and dramatic moments in the film.
I loved QUEEN OF KATWE and can definitely recommend it.”-Nicole
