2019 has been the year of the fade, with both girls and boys alike wearing a close crop around the ears that gradually fades toward the top.
Wild colors, mixed colors, and braids have been popular as well with no color being off-limits. Both boys and girls have adopted the color blue and pink for their highlights. Popular stars like Fortnite player Ninja and reality TV star Kylie Jenner have been seen with hairstyles rocking the color blue over the last year.
Let’s go over some popular hairstyles starting with longer hairstyles and gradually getting shorter.
French Braid
French braids have been a common sight in 2019 with many even opting to make two different colored braids. The French braid is fairly easy to produce and features two braided ponytails extending from the front of the head, over the top toward the back, and down the neck. These can be tied off with a rubber band. For an easy trick, you can leave them in overnight and take them out the next day to get a crimped effect.
Braided Crown
The braided crown is a great style for those with waist-length hair and it involves making one large braid, wrapping the braid around the crown of the head, and pinning it in place with bobby pins. This style has a very unique look and is commonly used by nobility in dramatic period films and plays. If you want a style that evokes class and culture the braided crown is sure to get some attention.
Top Knot
Adding a bit of volume to the top of the head has been popular in hair salons and one easy way to do it is with a top knot. The top knot is created by making a ponytail and wrapping it in the shape of a circle to make the knot, then pinning it with a couple of bobby pins. You can add some variation here by backcombing under the ponytail or curling the hair in the back of the head. If you have highlights, the top knot can be a great way to show them off and it only takes a couple of moments.
A-Line Bob
The A-line bob has been a popular haircut throughout 2019. It is recognizable by the unique angle of the cut where the hair at the back is short and the length increases towards the front. The A-line can be cut short to flow with the jaw or it can be worn down to the shoulders depending on preference. Adding some bangs or parting to the side is one way to add some variation to this popular style.
Surfer Cut
While the bowl cut has been out of the trendy styles for some time, it does have a modern variant that is commonly called a surfer cut. It is worn several inches long and is a tousled hairstyle that is almost like a reversed A-line cut because the hair length grows longer toward the back. This is a common style among skateboarders and snowboarders as well as the surfers who made it popular.
Mini Afro with Fade
The afro haircut and style was popular in decades past, and it too has a modern equivalent that has become popular. It can best be described as a miniature afro that extends to around three to six inches in length but fades into a very short buzz around the ears and base of the neck.
The fade is a great way to add some personality with all sorts of line work that can be done with clippers. There are also several variations of the fade including the mid fade, high fade and taper fade that can be used to customize the style to your liking.
Crew Cut/Faux Hawk with Fade
The crew cut remains popular as an easy way to keep short hair neat but take it to the next level and make it into a style by adding a fade. You can choose to make it a high fade or low fade depending on your preference. You may even consider going with a bald fade to make the crew cut pop even more. If you’re willing to push the boundaries, you can go with a faux hawk and use a taper fade to finish the look.
These have been the top styles for trendy high schoolers in 2019 and they are likely to form the basis of the fashions in 2020.
