I was invited on an all expenses paid trip to cover #DisneysNutcrackerEvent and #TheKidsAreAlright #ABCTVEvent. All opinions are my own.
Have you seen the newest ABC show The Kids Are Alright? It airs Tuesdays at 8:30|7:30c on ABC. It is a comedy that follows a traditional Irish-Catholic family in the 1970’s.
While I was in LA I had the chance to visit and tour the set. It was a lot of fun to see behind the scenes. I really enjoy set visits because you get to see all the small details that make it so believable on camera.
Caleb Foote who plays Eddie Cleary joined us on the set and he was such a nice guy in person. It was fun having him talk to us about the show as we toured.
We were told the house set was actually modeled after a small ranch house in Studio City that was built in 1932. The creators wanted it to have the feel of a small crowded house so instead of making it 25% larger as they do with most sets, they left it small giving it that feeling of tightness and everyone bumping into each other.`
It was cool to see so many vintage items in one spot. They said they did their due diligence in finding things that were from the right period. And although the show is taking place in 1972, they don’t have any furniture from the 1970’s. What you see is mainly from the 50’s and 60’s, due to this family not being able to afford 1972 brand new furniture.
They told us how in every kitchen scene Peggy Cleary will be doing something physical like grabbing a cookbook, folding something, etc… as the kids come to her with an issue she is busy maintaining a house.
I like opening up the fridge and seeing how it looks just like a real family of 10 refrigerator would look. The tin foil covered casserole dishes make me feel like I am at Grandma’s house. As I said, I enjoy those little details. Very fun.
I liked having the creators and talent walking the set with us pointing out fun details. Being on a set is a really fun experience. A sneak peek into all the work it takes to make a show.
It was very cool to be on the set of this fun new comedy on ABC.
Watch The Kids Are Alright Tuesdays at 8:30|7:30c on ABC.
