I attended an advanced screening for my review. All opinions are my own.
“Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical “Moana 2” reunites Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. “
My family loves Moana and my kids have been very excited to see Moana 2. Although we did not think it was as good as the first one, we really enjoyed Moana 2.
I thought that the storyline was fun. Moana must go on an adventure to connect all the people of the ocean. There are a lot of fun new characters introduced to be Moana’s crew. My kids really liked that Moana now has a little sister, named Simea, in the film. I felt like the movie did lag a bit in the middle. My 4-year-old was struggling to pay attention by the end of the film. Make sure to stay partway through the credits for an additional scene.
I thought that the music and new songs were beautiful and well done but the songs were just not as memorable, or as catchy, as the first film. I really liked the fact that many songs and sounds from the islands were included in the film’s songs and score.
The cast was great, and you can tell that they had a lot of fun making the film. Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson were once again great as Moana and Maui.
Moana 2 is rated PG “for action/peril.” There were some scary moments, involving monsters, in the movie. If your child has seen the first Moana film, and they are okay with it, they will be just fine watching Moana 2. The scariness factor is very similar.
Moana 2 is a great film for the whole family to enjoy together this holiday season. Our family really liked it!
