I love young adult novels and was very curious about reading Max Quick: The Pocket and the Pendant. I was intrigued with the concept of time stopping in the world, except for a few certain people. The way that the book really ‘sucked’ me in was the fact that we did not know Max’s true identity. I wanted to know who or even what he was.
One thing that I liked was that Mr. Jeffrey had good control over the story. There are many different things going on in this book and the book could have been a huge mess! Events in the book are resolved well and have meaning to the overall plot. I hate it when I read books and things happen that do not help the story move along. This book did not do that.
My favorite thing about this book was the characters’ means of travel. They can run really fast. It is explained with physics concepts in the book, it is hard to explain! I also like that they move to different places by ‘entering’ books.
I will say that this is probably one of the strangest books I have read in a long time. I did enjoy it though. I was excited to find out that it is a series. I am very interested in reading the next in the series. I think middle school kids and even some younger kids will enjoy it as well!
Do not just take my word for it! Max Quick has been getting some great recognition! It is a 2011 Junior Library Guild Selection and was mentioned by Oscar nominated address, Abigail Breslin in a recent interview. She says it is one of her favorites.
Max Quick is available in stores and online. For more information, you can go to the Max Quick Series Website.
