I attended an advanced screening for my review. All opinions are my own.
“Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writing of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters- four young women each determined to live life on her own terms—is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.”-©Columbia Pictures
I have been super excited to see Little Women. I love the one with Winona Ryder from the 90s. I have been a little nervous about how the new one would compare. I absolutely loved the new Little Women. It is probably one of the best movies I have seen this year.
The cast is absolutely fantastic. They are definitely the glue that makes this movie successful. They all have great chemistry together. You would believe that they were really sisters. The standouts for me were Saoirse Ronan as Jo and Florence Pugh as Amy. They were both fantastic. Saoirse Ronan definitely carries the movie and makes it successful.
I liked how the storyline was presented. It definitely has a more feminist view than previous versions. Also, the movie is told more in a flashback style verses a linear storyline. I thought it was a new, fresh way to tell the story. My husband went with me and liked it, but he is not as familiar with the story as I am and found the flashback style a little difficult to follow.
This movie is rated PG “for thematic elements and brief smoking.” Although this movie is PG, I would not necessarily recommend it for little kids. It definitely has more adult themes. I think this movie would be perfect for a girl’s night out or a fun outing with your significant other.
I loved Little Women and I will be seeing it again. I have been recommending it to all of my friends and family members. It is a fantastic movie.
