I have been seeing the commercials and trailers for this movie. I have not read the book but I was very curious to see this film. Not for the story, but for the visual effects. After seeing the film, not only were the visual effects in this movie absolutely amazing but I was surprised how much I enjoyed the storyline of the film. Eventually, I am going to have to pick up this book and see if it is as much of an attention getter as the film was.
I have read that this movie had been considered “unfilmable” and has had a couple of failed attempts. I am glad that this movie has finally been made because it is a great story. This movie had great acting from the lead boy, Suraj Sharma, as the character of young Pi. This really is his movie. A good majority of the movie, it is only him and a tiger on screen. He had to carry this movie on his shoulders and does spectacular. Another fun thing to watch was the tiger, Richard Parker. I am so curious to know how many of the scenes were with a real tiger or a digital tiger. The effects are so good that you cannot tell the difference. During the movie, as a audience member, you are really a part of the story. A majority of the movie take place on the water in a lifeboat. You would think that this could be boring but it is not.
The special effects in this movie were phenomenal especially in 3D. Many of the most beautiful sequences involve sea life. There is a sequence with a blue whale that is just amazing. I was amazed how fantastic this movie looked. The special effects in this movie will definitely be nominated and may even win an Academy Award next year.
I really enjoyed Life of Pi. I have not read the book and do not know how fans of the book are going to react but I thought it was great. I believe it will be getting some award recognition in a couple of months. Although the movie is rated PG, this movie is more a movie for adults. I think the little kids may get bored. This would be a great movie for mom, dad, and older children.
