Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption-a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever. In December 2012, the world’s longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen in Tom Hooper’s sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo’s epic tale. — (C) Universal
I have been looking forward to seeing this movie since it was announced. The major reason why was Hugh Jackman being cast as Jean Valjean. As more cast members started to get announced, I got even more excited! I had really high hopes for this movie not because of the people in it, but because I love the musical as well. Les Miserables was a fantastic movie.
There are many reasons why I loved this movie. First of all, the acting in the movie was incredible from everyone. I was really surprised how well all of the cast members sang. One thing that was different about how this movie musical was made is that the actors sang live on the set. Their voices were not pre-recorded. Because of this, the actors were able to put more passion and be ‘in the moment’ more. You can definitely tell. By far, in my opinion, the best performance in the movie goes to Anne Hathaway with her portrayal of Fantine. Her performance pulls at your heartstrings. Many people, including me, were crying during Anne’s performance of the song I Dreamed A Dream. Anne Hathaway deserves to win an Oscar for her performance.
The art direction for this movie was incredible. You are immersed into the background of the French Revolution. You feel like you are there with the characters. I know that after the film was over, I was still thinking about it.
This movie is a great movie of adults and their teenagers. It earns its PG-13 rating with sexual material and violence. It is not a good movie to take young kids to. In the musical, the song Master of the House has some racy content. The movie pushes this content more to the extreme. My sister and I thought this scene was pretty bad. I do have to admit, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter were both great during this scene. Just a bit raunchy in my opinion.
If you are a fan of the musical, you are definitely going to like this movie. If you are not familiar with the musical, go see this movie because it is a great film!
