I attended an advanced screening for my review. All opinions are my own.
“I Wanna Dance with Somebody is a powerful and triumphant celebration of the incomparable Whitney Houston. Directed by Kasi Lemmons, written by Academy Award® nominee Anthony McCarten, produced by legendary music executive Clive Davis and starring BAFTA Award® winner Naomi Ackie, the film is a no-holds-barred portrait of the complex and multifaceted woman behind The Voice. From New Jersey choir girl to one of the best-selling and most awarded recording artists of all time, audiences are taken on an inspirational, poignant—and so emotional—journey through Houston’s trailblazing life and career, with show-stopping performances and a soundtrack of the icon’s most beloved hits as you’ve never heard them before. Don’t you wanna dance?”
I love Whitney Houston’s music and was excited to see that a biopic was being made about her. Although it is not the best biopic I have seen, I did enjoy watching I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
The cast was fantastic in this movie. I really enjoyed Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston. I thought that she was fantastic at capturing Whitney’s personality and mannerisms. I loved seeing Stanley Tucci as Clive Davis and thought that he performed the role well.
I loved all the music in the movie. It was fun to see and get some more insight into some of Whitney’s greatest hits and to remember Whitney’s amazing voice and talent. The movie is a reminder how sad and complicated her life was and how tragic her death was. A talent lost too soon.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody is rated PG-13 “for strong drug content, some language, suggestive references, and smoking.” I would say that this movie is appropriate for ages 15 and older. There is a lot of drug use and content, especially with cocaine and other substances.
I enjoyed watching I Wanna Dance With Somebody. I think it is a fun movie to see, especially if you are a Whitney Houston fan.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody gets bragging rights!
