Have you stalled on a project lately because you just feel creatively blocked? When you’re in this state, it can be hard to imagine a way back to creativity and productivity. Sometimes it can start to feel like the best you can do is drag yourself to work and keep yourself fed. The good news is that there is plenty you can do to reinvigorate the spark and feel excited about your life again.
Refresh Yourself
If you are trying to work on a project and the ideas just aren’t coming, you may need to find a way to reboot yourself like you would a computer. Anything that jolts you out of your perspective or helps you look at the world in a different way can do the trick. You might try listening to a piece of music, for example, or going for a walk. Sometimes, a repetitive physical activity can help free your mind. You might be able to shake those thoughts loose by taking a break and vaping. If you’re in the market for a new portable vape or you’ve been curious about giving it a try, you can look at a collection online. Other things that can be helpful include talking through the project with someone else to get a new perspective, going to a different location to work or even sleeping on it.
Change Your Medium
If you normally work on a computer, walk away and try using a pen and paper instead. You may be able to stimulate different parts of your brain when you’re holding a pen and working more tangibly. You could also try creating in a medium that you don’t normally work in. For example, if you’re a painter and you’re stuck, try writing a poem about your idea instead. It’s fine if it’s the worst poem anyone has ever written; your goal here is not to win at open mike night or even produce something that you’d be willing to show anyone but to see if expressing what you are trying to express in a new way can help you get past a block.
Take Care of Yourself
Sometimes, what you need more than anything is a good night’s sleep, some good nutritious food and a break. Take a mental health day from work if you can, or if you can’t, block out a weekend day to do nothing. If you have a family, enlist them to help you in this endeavor. Don’t make this a day when you try to get caught up on other things. Just take it easy, sleep until noon if you feel like it and spending the rest of the day playing video games, reading, watching movies or doing anything else you feel like as long as it isn’t strenuous. After this small break, resolve to try to take better care of yourself physically. Sometimes your lack of creativity and feeling of being completely out of steam can be traced back to something as simple as needing to go to bed an hour earlier, get some exercise, get outside in the fresh air and natural light for a little while each day, or eat more nutritious meals.
