Many of us do not tend to clean curtains because it is a laborious job. Taking the drapes down, washing, drying, pressing, and then re-hanging takes many productive hours, so people prefer to change the dirty curtains with a new one.
Changing the curtains every six months might be cost-restrictive. But now you do not need to replace the old curtain with the new one because I will tell you how you can clean the curtain easily without putting it off.
Method of Cleaning Curtains Without Taking them Down
Dust Removal (Shaking)
The very first step of curtain cleaning is removing the dust by shaking. This will remove the dirt that is attached slightly to the drapes. You need to shake the curtains vigorously but do not shake them from the bottom. Instead, shake the curtain by holding the drapes just after the rods.
After shaking, you need to wait for a few minutes so the dust will settle down. After approx 5 to 10 minutes, clean the dirt from the room, then start vacuuming.
Vacuum Clean the Curtain
Vacuum cleaning of curtains is necessary. It should be done every day or at least once a week because the fiber of the curtain traps dust quickly and makes it look dirty. The curtains used in outdoor gardening catch more dust, stains, and sometimes mold, so you need a vacuum cleaner to clean such massive dirt.
For the vacuum cleaning the curtain, the machine should have a long attachment so it will reach from the top of the curtain to the bottom easily. You can also use a brush while vacuuming to get rid of firmly attached dirt.
If you vacuum clean the curtain regularly, you do not need to deep clean the drapes very often. Instead, it will give a perfect look with just vacuum cleaning.
Do not set the device at high speed. Setting up the high suction speed may suck the cloth of the curtain and thus damage the fabric. You can attach the nylon and plastic over the nozzle to prevent this undesired happening.
Removing Stubborn Dirt
It is difficult to remove mulish dirt even with a vacuum cleaner. Leaving these fabric fibers and dust spoils the look, so you also need to pull them out. Some fibers attract more lint (the fiber of yarn or fabrics), so it is harder to clean them.
The best way to remove such dirt is through brushing. You can also use a lint roller which will make your task easier.
Steam Clean
Steam cleaning plays two in one job. The steamer cleans the stains and grease and also removes the crease if any. Steam cleaning is the best way of curtain cleaning without taking them out. While buying the handheld steam cleaner look, it has upholstery attached to it.
The portable steam cleaner makes your work much easier and cleans the tough stains. The working mechanism of the steam cleaner is quite simple. When you apply a vertical stroke of powerful steam, it penetrates the fiber and removes the stains without hurting the curtain fiber. It cleans every fiber of your drapes where you apply the steam.
Steam cleaners show effective cleaning in drapes made of thick fibers. While using the steam cleaner for curtain cleaning, carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions.
Deodorization
Some good steam cleaners may also do the job of deodorization. But you can also do it separately if your curtain is not smelling clean and fresh. There are different sweet-smelling deodorizers available online or in the upholstery shop. This deodorizer comes in spray nozzle cans. You just need to spray it on the curtains. You can also use baking soda. Baking soda, chemically known as Sodium Bicarbonate, is a commonly used deodorant. It neutralizes the nasty smell by combining the acid and base thus the environment feels smell free. Along with baking soda, use the essential oil of your favorite fragrance to produce a fresh sweet smell.
Window Cleaning
Dirty windows act as the main source of making the drapes dirty. You need to clean the window and grill very often to keep the curtains clean. The drapes rub with the window and catch the grease or dust from the window. You can opt for any usual window cleaning technique to make it dirt free.
Should I wash my curtain?
You can also wash the curtains with warm water, but sometimes it is not preferred. Even the washable fabrics may shrink due to washing, so it should be done carefully. Apart from this, some fabrics are water-sensitive and should not be washed in a machine. For such fabric, dry cleaning is the best option.
Drapes of velvet can be washed, but it takes too long to dry, so you can opt for brush cleaning. Silk and curtains of other fiber should be washed in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. While washing the curtains, set your machine in gentle washing to keep your curtains looking good for long.
