I received tickets in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
In an all-new production, Gypsy, lauded by critics as the greatest American musical, is directed by the nationally acclaimed Peter Rothstein starring a super-talented local cast including the mother–daughter powerhouse team of Michelle Barber and Cat Brindisi, and the Ivey Award-winning Tyler Michaels. Gypsy is the story of Mama Rose, the mother of all stage mothers, and her driving ambition to raise two daughters in show business as vaudeville gave way to burlesque. The Tony Award-winning show, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, boasts some of the most memorable songs ever written—“Everything’s Coming up Roses,” “Together (Wherever We Go)” and “Let Me Entertain You.” Gypsy is the latest in the award-winning Broadway Re-Imagined series produced by Hennepin Theatre Trust and Theater Latté Da.
Have you ever seen Gypsy? I had never seen it before, so it’s an understatement to say that I was excited to attend opening night for Gypsy at Pantages Theatre, thanks to Hennepin Theatre Trust. It was the PERFECT Minneapolis date night for me and my guy.
Beforehand, we had dinner across the street at The Union. They have this AWESOME enclosed rooftop that is perfect for a chilly Minnesota night- nice and warm inside, with a great view of the surrounding downtown area. (Be sure to make a reservation, with Gypsy playing there was a 90 min wait list for a table, thank goodness I remembered to make one!)
First of all, Pantages is GORGEOUS! Last year, I went to see my very first Broadway play in NYC, which was truly a dream come true. I do have to say though, that I think I enjoyed the Pantages theatre more!
And as far a Gypsy… We loved it! It was very entertaining. I even knew some of the songs, to my surprise. The actors and actresses were AMAZING- great singers, so funny, and very talented. The storyline is so interesting- I wasn’t sure how it was all going to end, but I was pleasantly surprised. Even better, afterwards I did some internet digging to learn more about Gypsy Rose Lee- absolutely fascinating. Gypsy is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist. The whole thing has that magical air of history, scandal, and obstacles overcome. The perfect story to base a musical on!
