Boys and model airplanes have always gone together. Well at least in my family. My brother used to love making them with my father when I was growing. Now both of my older boys like to build things with their father. When I was asked to review Guillow’s Model Airplane Kits I knew it would be a good idea to say yes. So I accepted and was lucky enough to receive 3 different Guillow’s miniModel Airplane Kits to build. The perfect number for my family. All three of my older children will have a plane made for them. So if they do not get the chance to build their plane with daddy, he will still get it built for them and there will be no hurt feelings! Its funny that my husband seemed more excited that the kids when he saw them arrive. He told me that the memories made building planes with daddy will last a life time, at least they have for him that is.
When we opened up the package we saw that we were sent three of Guillow’s miniModel Airplane Kits, the U.S. Warhawk, The U.S. Hellcat, and The U.S. V-Tail. My husband can remember building his very first Guillow’s Model Airplane with his own grandfather when he was around the age of 7 he says. He says that the memory of that day with his grandfather is probably one of his favorite memories. He wants so badly for our children to have those same happy memories of making these mini Model Airplanes together. I imagine that my husband’s grandfather may have even built one of these Guillow’s Model Airplane Kits with his own grandfather because Guillow’s has been around making Model Airplane Building Kits for 88 years. Its an amazing thought that we can pass down an 88 year old family tradition to our children in hopes that they will one day build a Guillow’s Model Airplane Kit with their own children. That would make my heart melt and bring tears to my eyes. Anyways, back to my review!
So the Guillow’s miniModel Airplane Kits that we received were very well explained! All three airplane kits had laser cut balsa wood sheets that you had to push the parts out of basically. Balsa wood is very delicate to handle. I actually snapped 2 parts in half by accident when I tried to help with the building of the planes. They were easily repaired though with some super glue. The balsa would is very light weight which is good for a plane that you want to actually fly. Everything you need to build the Model Airplanes are included in the kits. You just need to have wire cutters and glue to build it fully. On the side of the box they have a break down of the time it will take you to finish building each section of the plane. Total time is estimated to take about an hour. My husband and my oldest son finished the first plane, The U.S. Warhawk in just over an hour. I am sure if I had not tried to help and slowed them down some that they would have had it completed in that hour. They also have a 3D diagram you can look at online to help you with your building questions.
My children really enjoyed their quality time with dad building their Guillow’s miniModel Airplanes and that means more to me than anything else in the world. Quality time building things and having fun together as a family is really important. The airplanes turned out great and when it warms up we are going to take them out to the park and try to fly them. We will definitely continue to purchase more of Guillow’s ModelAirplane Kits to build together as the years go by.
“For generations, American kids would save their nickels (yes, nickels!) to buy a Guillow’s model airplane kit. As their imaginations soared, so did the years but the little airplane that could, did, going on 88 years! Today Guillow’s is beloved by Grandpops as well as kids who may be technically savvy but still enjoy the simple beauty of building then flying a balsa wood toy plane. There are six new miniModels in the 4500 series, and for this iGeneration, building help is now available as a bonus online in 3D models that you can spring, turn and control with your mouse, plus how-to-assemble video on Youtube!
The 4500 Series starts with the U.S. Hellcat or U.S. Warhawk each with red propellers. The handsome German Fighter has distinctive black markings on its wingtips while the American war models sport patriotic blue. The non-military Rockstar Jet,V-Tail and Stunt Flyer round out the six miniModels. An affordable price of $8.99 is the cherry on top of this wonderful classic toy sundae.
