From creative genius Tim Burton comes Frankenweenie, a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life-with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous. A stop-motion animated film, Frankenweenie will be filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D, which will elevate the classic style to a whole new experience. — (C) Disney
When I heard Tim Burton was doing a full length stop-motion version of Frankenweenie, I got so excited! Many people may not know that this movie is actually a remake of a live action short film that Tim Burton made in the 80’s. I remember watching it on the Disney Channel when I was a little girl. It is also included on the special edition of the Nightmare Before Christmas. In my opinion, this new updated version is probably one of the best movies Tim Burton has made.
The animation in this movie is incredible. It is so detailed, especially Sparky with all of his stitches and patches. Sparky is so cute! This movie is also in black and white. It also has that classic Tim Burton ‘goth’ feel to it. This fits the tone of the movie well. This movie is a homage to the old classic horror films and to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
It is very easy to connect with this film. If you have ever lost a pet, you understand the sadness and the desire to have that pet back. You feel for Victor when Sparky dies and understand why he wants to bring Sparky back to life.
This movie was hilarious but sort of demented. Other pets and animals are brought back to life in this movie but not with the same cute and sweet results as Sparky. These animals start to terrorize the small town of New Holland. My husband and I were laughing during this part. It almost felt like you were watching old horror movie with bad special effects. It was fitting to do it in this movie though.
My one warning about this movie is that it has been advertised as a family film. I really believe that this movie may scare some younger children. Make sure you really think about what your younger children can handle before you take them. It would be sad if they ended up having nightmares because of this movie.
I absolutely loved Frankenweenie and it is the perfect movie to see for Halloween! When it comes out on Bluray, I will definitely be adding it to my movie collection.
