Did you know ….”Our microbes outnumber human cells 10:1. Like the rainforest, the healthy human microbiome is a balanced ecosystem. Microbes perform essential functions such as digesting food and synthesizing vitamins. Studies have also linked the microbiome to human mood and behavior, as well as gut health, human development, and metabolic disorders.”
I was introduced to the concept of the Microbiome a couple of years ago and have been so interested in how it can affect my health. When I came across uBiome and realized I could see what kind of microbes were inhabiting my OWN microbiome, I knew I had to try it out! Ubiome sent me a kit for review to analyze my gut and the results were so interesting.
“uBiome is a microbiome sequencing service that provides information and tools for you to explore your microbiome. Based on research from the NIH Human Microbiome Project, we’ve perfected the technology to perform large-scale microbiome studies. Once we receive your sample, it goes in the lab and the magic happens”
Discovering what is in my gut microbiome was as easy as taking a sample and sending it into the uBiome lab. They extract the bacterial DNA and identify each of the bacteria that it came from. They compare it to dusting a scene for fingerprints. Once they have my gut ‘fingerprints’, they analyze it and then compile it into graphs so that I can
explore what is taking up residence in my gut. I access my information through a private account on their website and this allows me to compare my results to others to see how my gut ‘measures up’. I can also take multiple samples to see how my microbiome changes.
Not only can you discover your gut microbiome, you can take samples of your mouth, nose, skin, and genitals. All of these can tell you important information about your health and certainly gives you a nice starting point to take control of your health. Our microbiomes are an incredibly complex and essential part of US and uBiome has given us a way to look inside those areas. It’s all very fascinating!
“There is a wealth of evidence that the human microbiome has profound consequences for our health. It has been correlated with a wide range of health conditions, from obesity, heart health, and IBD to autism, anxiety, and depression. Working together with our collaborators and crowd scientists we hope to advance human understanding of this emerging area.”
