I attended an advanced screening for my review. All opinions are my own.
“From award-winning creator Julian Fellowes comes the motion picture event DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA. The much-anticipated cinematic return of the global phenomenon reunites the beloved cast as they go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa.”-©Focus Features
I love the Downton Abbey series. I have been very excited to see the new movie, Downton Abbey: A New Era. I really enjoyed watching the film.
One of the main reasons I enjoyed the film so much is all of the actors in the film are fantastic. This really is an ensemble film. I really enjoyed the new cast members, especially Hugh Dancy. Once again, Maggie Smith is a scene stealer as the Dowager Countess of Grantham. She always has some of the best lines!
I enjoyed that there were 2 different storylines in the film. One focus is on a movie being filmed at Downton Abbey and the other is visiting a villa house in France that the Dowager Countess has inherited. I enjoyed the bouncing between the storylines, it helped keep my attention better. After the film was over, I felt like the storylines from the series have been basically wrapped up. I would love the filmmakers to make more Downton Abbey films but fans will be satisfied and happy if this is where it ends.
I will say, if you have not seen the tv series or the previous movie, you will be confused on who the characters are and not fully understand what is going on. This is a movie for the fans and viewers of the series.
This movie is rated PG “for some suggestive references, language, and thematic elements.” Although this movie is rated PG, it is meant for teens and adults. I think little kids will get bored because they are not the target audience.
If you like the series, you will love returning to Downton Abbey again for A New Era. If you have not watched the series, I highly recommend it. It is one of my favorites.
Downton Abbey: A New Era gets bragging rights!
