I attended a pre-screening of this movie for my review. All opinions are my own.
I have always been a fan of The Planet of the Apes movies and have fond memories of watching them with my parents and grandparents as a child. So naturally I was very excited to see this latest installment. It did not disappoint!
“A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.”- Written by Twentieth Century Fox
Let me start by saying the effects in this movie were incredible. I watched it in 3D and it was spectacular. The apes looked so real, the movements and all. I was blown away by how well made this was.
The story line and plot were very well done. From the minute it started I was fully invested in these Apes. It was moving, touching and very powerful. There are some great lessons to be learned from the things that happen in this movie. It is a great way to start a discussion with your older child about dealing with pain, loss, conflict, betrayal, morality, pride and anger. There is probably more… I really felt myself getting emotionally invested in these Apes which I think is a great quality in the movie. Some of the scenes were so powerful I got chills and tears in my eyes for other scenes.
It was also very entertaining and in my opinion worth seeing in theaters to get the full effect.
This movie definitely deserves it’s PG-13 rating. It is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence and action, brief strong language (there is 1 F word). There are many parts that would be scary for a younger child. Also the violence is more than a young child could handle. After seeing it I have decided it will be at least a few years before I allow my 6 year old son watch it. But for a child over 13 I think they will be able to handle it and enjoy the movie.
I highly recommend seeing this in theaters and in 3D if possible!
