”Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.”
The film picks up after the Avengers film and follows Steve Rogers/Captain America as he joins up with other heroes and battles bad guys once again. In a way you’ve already seen this film, in another it’s very much a departure from the other Avengers character films. CGI is used less in this rendition than it has been in Thor or Iron-Man or the Avengers etc. Winter Soldiers trades out the over the top, every scene usage of CGI and sticks to good old fashion hand to hand fighting and copious amounts of gun play. It feels more like a Bourne movie at times than an Avengers film.
Winter Soldier follows the spirit of the comics while taking some artistic liberties but remains true to the essence of Captain America and the Winter Soldier. The Black Widow has more screen time here than in any of the movies and serves as a balance and contrast to Captain America. The Falcon is introduced and plays an ally to the greatest American soldier. SHEILD is throughout the movie and central to the story. Just like every other Marvel movie, or superhero movie, the main characters are never in any real danger and the only people that might be are minor side characters.
The world is in danger and only a small band of courageous outcasts can save the day. Like I said you’ve seen this movie already. That being said, the action is entertaining and fast moving. There are plenty of killer one-liners, a few feel good moments, and a couple of problems with physics (one can fall 40 stories and shake it off but a little bullet to the side stops them in their tracks). The movie is perfect for the big screen and unless you have a ten foot tall TV at home and finest audio system Winter Soldier is best enjoyed in the theater.
Captain America: Winter Soldier is a fun film that lets you know the summer film season is just starting. Make sure that you stay through the credits as there are two clips introducing the next films in the series; one in the middle of the credits and one after the credits are finished. Go prepared to have a good time just don’t expect there to be anything new or awe inspiring about this latest chapter in the Avengers saga.
Captain America Winter Soldier is rated PG-13 for for "intense sequences of violence, gunplay and action throughout".
