I received this product for my review. All opinions are my own.
My 10 year old son is really into all things STEM right now. He is in the STEM club at school and has a real passion for it. So when I was introduced to the littleBits Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit a couple of months ago, I knew it was something he would have a lot of fun with. Now that we have spent time playing with it. I am happy to say that my expectations (and his) have been exceeded. This is a super fun kit!
Let me start by saying that littleBits is a company that was created to make it easy for kids (and adults) to be able to build circuits and inventions. They have done an excellent job at making it really enjoyable and very hassle-free.
Here is a look at what comes inside the kit:
Right away it tells you to download the app. which is available on iTunes as well as on Google Play. The app is not only how you will control your droid, but also has step by step instructions which they call “Missions”. There are 16+ missions and activities.
Each mission will walk you through how to build each part of your droid. It has color images and videos making it really easy to follow the instructions. You can even pause and rewatch them. Then once you complete a mission you move on to the next mission.
It comes with 3 sheets of stickers (black, blue, and red) to customize your droid.
Once your droid is built you can play with your droid, create movement patterns so your droid can move on it’s own, as well as create a new kind of droid. littleBits actually encourages you to take it apart and build it again in a different way. There are so many possibilities!
My son loves this Droid inventor kit and has been having a blast with it. He loves that the controls are Bluetooth (through the app) so he doesn’t have to be close to the droid to control it.
As a mom, I love this kit because it is easy for my 10-year-old to do on his own (but also fun if you want to do it together). I like that the app walks him through it and he doesn’t have to constantly ask me for help. More importantly, it is fostering his love for STEM and encouraging him in his creativity. It is a high-quality product and I definitely recommend it.
I also want to share with you a new competition that littleBits is currently holding.
“On November 15th, littleBits announced the littleBits Competition: Droid Inventor Kit which invites kids, families, and Star Wars fans—residing in the US, UK, and Canada – to share their own unique Droid creations with the global inventor community. The competition will run from November 15, 2017, to January 10, 2018.
Fans and families will be able to submit their own leading-edge Droid design creations, judged by Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley (the actress who portrays Rey in the current Star Wars trilogy) and Kelly Marie Tran (the actress who portrays Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi) alongside Ayah Bdeir (founder and CEO of littleBits) and Kathleen Kennedy (president of Lucasfilm).”
