AVI vs. MP4: What Are the Differences?

Did you know that 82% of the universal internet traffic will come from streaming videos and downloads by 2022? Some multimedia formats for playing media on the internet include MP4, MP3, and AVI.

AVI and MP4 are the most used multimedia formats. MP4 can store video, audio, subtitles, and images. It also allows streaming on the internet.

AVI, alias Audio Video Interleaved, can play audio and video data synchronously.

Various merits and demerits exist when comparing AVI vs. MP4. Even so, the main difference lies in the portability of AVI files.

While they both are media formats, AVI and MP4 have several differences. Keep reading to find out what they are.

Compression

Audio Video Interleaved (AVI) compresses fewer data of video and audio. It’s also possible to get an AVI file that’s not compressed if you so wish. Thus, AVI files consume more storage space than mp4 video files.

MP4, on the other hand, can compress files and store data simultaneously. Besides, the MP4 video format intends to reduce the size of a video file. This makes it a moveable and internet-friendly video format.

File Size

Since it takes up a lot of storage, AVI video files are more extensive than MP4. Still, you can make AVI files smaller by converting AVI to MP4.

You may also convert your files to FLV or other compressed video formats. Alternatively, using a specialized video compressor can directly reduce the size of AVI files.

Quality

Both AVI video format and MP4 video format use dissimilar codecs that cause the difference in quality. AVI files use the DivX codecs, and MP4 uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codecs.

Generally, the quality of the AVI video format will be better than the MP4 format. Yet, it doesn’t imply that MP4 has low or poor quality. The chances are that MP4 will perform better if the loading files are identical.

Compatible Devices

AVI files are compatible with Microsoft devices or Mac OS X with extra software. MP4 files are compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, iPhones, and iPads.

While AVI files are Windows-based media players and are best for TV, the MP4 video format can support all media players and is suitable for social media platforms and browsers.

Subtitles

The MP4 video format can support two types of subtitles – VodSub and MPEG-4 Timed Text. As for AVI files, subtitles must contain SubRip, XSUB, or Substation Alpha through a third-party modification and DivX.

Besides, AVI supports HD and FULL HD video files. MP4, on the other hand, can keep 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD), FULL HD, and HD video files.

AVI vs. MP4 Multimedia Formats

The AVI video format, developed by Microsoft, has been operating longer than the MP4 format. Unlike AVI files, MP4 video format can integrate 3D graphics, menus, and other user navigation options.

But AVI file formats are the best for master files since they can maintain quality over a long time. You’ll also need no special hardware or software to run and make playable DVDs.
