I was invited on an all expenses paid trip by Disney to LA to cover #AdventuresInBabysitting. All opinions are my own.
When I was in LA back in April, I had the chance to screen the upcoming Adventures in Babysitting Disney Channel Original Movie. It is so cute and lots of fun! It is a great movie that the whole family can watch together and I think everyone will enjoy it.
Take a look at the Adventures in Babysitting trailer…
Adventures in Babysitting premieres tomorrow FRIDAY, JUNE 24 (8:00 p.m. EDT) on Disney Channel. Be sure to tune in with the family. It is actually the 100th Disney Channel Original Movie, very cool!
After screening the movie, we had the chance to interview the stars of the movie, Sabrina Carpenter (who plays Jenny Parker) and Sofia Carson (who plays Lola Perez). Besides being very beautiful these two young ladies are so sweet, smart and well spoken in person. It was a delight getting to chat with them and learn more about their experience making this movie.
What was it like filming this movie?
Sabrina: The five kids are some of the most talented we’ve ever met. And they were so professional, and they were such a joy to work with. I wish I could babysit them.
Sofia: We all became like a family, and we had, like, little parties every weekend, all of us. We were singing and dancing, karaoke and improv games. We had the greatest time.
What’s the funniest thing about each other?
Sabrina: That she’s not that funny…(she laughs)
Sofia: That’s what I was gonna say! That I’m not funny (She laughs)
Sabrina: No, but that’s what makes her funny is that she knows that she’s not funny. But with the script, she’s so funny. Like, if she had writers for her all the time, she’d be so funny…
Sofia: I’d be hysterical. Good thing I’m an actress. And Sabrina’s probably the funniest person you will ever meet. She doesn’t need a script.
Sabrina, had you seen the 1987 version of the movie before, and had you heard that they were making it?
Sabrina: Absolutely. Well, actually, I didn’t hear that they were making it, because Disney kind of came to both Sofia and I and we auditioned with each other. We were the first to, If I’m correct, I think read for the roles, and it worked. We’re very lucky that it, that it worked out perfectly. I did see the movie. I was a big fan. My mom was a big fan of the movie. So to be able to create a new version of such a classic, beloved tale for this new generation, was something I was honored to do. And it was an incredible experience. Apparently I have a thing with like, sequels and remakes.
How much of the stunts in the movie did you guys get to do yourselves?
Sabrina: She gets to do her stunts. She’s legal.
Sofia: I got to do all the stunts which is cool.
Sabrina: I got to pretend drive… I would, like, take my hands off the wheel and forget to turn on my turn signal, ’cause I don’t drive. I don’t have my permit…We have a lot of bloopers of me in the car. ‘Cause, yeah, I can’t really drive. But…
Will there be the bloopers on the DVD?
Sofia: Yes.
Sabrina: Yeah. For sure.
Do you guys have any stories either babysitting or from a babysitter you had?
Sofia: I will babysit my little cousins. But they are such good kids. They’re angels. I have no funny stories! Like, we got ice cream. I got chocolate. They got strawberry. They went to sleep. And it was very easy. Nothing like what we experienced in this movie. There were no ferrets involved whatsoever.
Sabrina: I’ve never babysat, but once I locked a babysitter out of the house. ‘Cause I didn’t really like her. Well, it was me and my two older sisters. She wasn’t a great babysitter, though. I will say that, because she brought over her boyfriend. And we’re like, we don’t know this person. And he was really, really nice, but still.
So are you guys more of a Lola or Jenny?
Sofia: I would say I’m kind of an in between. Lola is this really cool free spirited young girl who isn’t afraid to just live life, despite the consequences of sometimes making irresponsible decisions. But she’s really passionate about her art. And a very strong girl. I’m also very passionate about… I think we both are, about what we do, our music and acting. And we’re both also independent girls. We have really strong, incredible moms. And they taught us to be strong girls and represent girl power. And Lola and Jenny are both like that. ‘Cause Jenny, she’s a little bit more inside the box. She’s still a strong, powerful young girl and we both save the day together.
Sabrina: What she said. It’s true. Like I was saying earlier, I take from Lola because she’s got that edgy sense of humor, and she’s very passionate about her art. Whereas Jenny can’t be creative to save her life. That’s kind of what I spend my life doing. But I will say that I am sort of a perfectionist like Jenny and I think that’s good in our industry and what we do. To make sure that we’re always putting our best foot forward.
What was your favorite part of the movie?
Sabrina: One of my favorite scenes, besides where we first meet, ’cause I think that totally shows the, the dynamic of these two new babysitters, and gets you ready for the adventure that you’re about to go on. And the rap battle. I just really fun. I love the simple bathroom makeover scene for Jenny. She’s not getting a full makeover where they’re glamming her up and making her look like someone she’s not. But just kind of letting her hair down in a way where she can be a little bit more adventurous like Lola. It just kind of shows you what she’s taken from this whole adventure that they’ve had together, and how she’s a little bit more confident than she was before.
Sofia: I also love the rap battle scene. Well, me and Sabrina got to be rappers for the first time in our lives. And we were like totally trying to be the Iggy Azalea Nikki Minaj. And it was just such a fun scene to shoot. It was so high energy. The music was awesome. The energy in the club was great. The kids were so cute and so hysterical. We had a great shoot. Also, that moment was kind of the beginning of their friendship, because until then, they never really understood each other or really saw anything in each other they could relate to. But in that moment they kind of were on equal ground for the first time. And despite their differences, they start this really beautiful friendship throughout the film that is my favorite part of the movie.
What is that like being in the public eye? And what does that do for your personal life?
Sofia: It is an honor to be able to be in a position where we can influence young girls. And it’s a big responsibility, but it’s a beautiful responsibility because as we were growing up, we looked up to actors and singers to be our role models as well. And their voice, and what they stand for always influenced us so much. I think we’re very lucky to tell stories, like Lola and Jenny’s story. Girls who represent girl power, ’cause girls can take over the world. So I think it’s an honor to be able to share these stories with them.
Sabrina: And also the fact that I think Sophia and I both had such big dreams and aspirations as to what we wanted to do. And I think the fact that we’ve been able to figure out those dreams and not only get to do them every day, but love what we do every day is hopefully an inspiration to girls everywhere, and boys, to figure out what they want to do. And make sure that whatever they do in life, that they love, so that way they don’t have to work a day in their life.
Who were your role models growing up?
Sofia: My role model’s always been my mom. She’s the most incredible woman in the world. Most incredible woman I know. And I always strive to be just a little bit like her every day. Even if it’s just, like, 10% of what she is, that would be enough, ’cause she is truly my hero.
Sabrina: My mom and dad, and my older sisters. My whole family. The Carpenter bunch is kind of a special bunch. And, and I think that my, my parents always stressed in my head that I was unique, and that I was special, and that I was different. And then I could do whatever I put my mind to. And those are the kind of people that you want to have in your life forever. And I’m lucky to call them family.
Which scene was the most difficult to shoot?
Sofia: The most difficult scene to shoot. Maybe because the time constraint. It’s really emotional scene between Jenny and Lola. I think we had a total three minutes to shoot it. It was the, like, climax of the movie emotionally between the two girls. We were both in tears, and I remember, it was such an adrenaline rush because. It was freezing outside. It was like 10:00 at night. She had to be out of there in, like, two minutes. We had one shot for each close-up. And we did it. And it was such a rush. And it’s one of my favorite parts in the movie.
Sabrina: Also one of the hardest was, we were outside right before we did the bus scene with Carl. It was so cold. We had to wear like five layers underneath and just trying to focus while also shaking.
How is it for you guys having fans reach out to you on social media?
Sofia: It’s really one of my favorite parts of our job. Apart from being able to do what we love every day. We get to feel and share so much love with your daughters, and your sons, and it really means the world to us to know that they take their time out of their day to make photos for us, make videos for us. When we meet them, they get emotional, and I almost always get very emotional as well, because it’s still surreal to me that someone can look up to you and care about you so much, and you could feel the same way about them. I know that social media’s really the best way to stay connected to them. I really feel like you can talk to them directly. They can talk to us directly. It was my birthday just on Sunday, and the amount of love that I received from all of my fans was just so beautiful. It really made me feel so loved, and I just hope to give it all back to them. ‘Cause we’re here because of them.
Sabrina: To be able to have such an instant interaction with social media nowadays is really special. The fact that you could make someone’s day, and you don’t even know them. Or you could get to know someone that quickly is wonderful. And I think it’s nice to have that instant connection.
As I said before it was so great getting to meet these young ladies, they were super sweet to take a photo with each of us after the interview.
