I have always wanted to find the perfect gift each time. I know it is never easy because there are way too many things that you have to consider like watches, leather wallets and leather card holders etc.. Not only do you have to find out what things that person might want, you also have to consider what he or she needs. And I do not have to tell you that both of those are extremely different things. This month was my husband’s 50th birthday so I thought I should make it extra special. In the end, I bought him a custom leather wallet. I know, it does not sound as flashy as a new car or a trip to the caribbean. But, I didn’t need to be flashy. I wanted a gift that would show him how much I appreciate him. So, how did I come about in making that decision? Well, here is my story.

The plan to find the best birthday gift for my husband started right after his forty ninth birthday. My gift for him then was a luxury watch which would have been perfect if not for the fact that everyone now has a phone in his or her hand twenty-four seven. The minute I saw him tidily placing the watch in his office drawer, I knew I had made the wrong decision. I always thought that I wanted something that he would be able to use everyday but perhaps at the back of my mind what I was really trying to do is to blow him away with the luxury aspect of a luxury watch.

I did not have the heart to tell my husband what he thought about my gift lest he be forced to lie to me just to spare my feelings from getting hurt. I knew the answer so there is really no reason for both of us to feel bad about it. There were a few times that I do see some use for it. For instance, when he meets with his clients at evening dinners or when he wants to show a classy side of him to his bosses. That did somehow give me a sense that the gift that I gave was not completely worthless but knowing that there had to be an exception for him to use the gift I gave did not sit right with me.

After all has been said and done, I made sure that the next gift would be better. Fumbling the gift for his forty ninth birthday is one thing, but I cannot let it happen on his fiftieth. So, I tossed out the magazine that gave me the luxury watch gift idea. I wanted to make sure that I am not going to be influenced by their savvy ads again. So, I bulked up on ideas when I had free time anyway. And, like magic, it was a month before the birthday and I am nowhere near finding the right gift.

I have never been one to let panic affect my decisions, but I just couldn’t make the same mistake I did last year. I was so close to just asking my husband what he wanted. I thought to myself that a surprise was not going to be worth another luxury watch that will go unused. Luckily enough, the eureka moment happened just before then.

We were out for a movie and while lining up for the cinema tickets, I noticed my husband panicky and clutching his pockets. I think I have an idea what was happening but I do not want to get ahead of him. He asked me to hold the spot for him and he rushed off to go back to the parking lot. At that point, I was certain that he did not have his wallet with him, and I was hoping that he simply left it in the car. He does not keep too many valuables in his wallet knowing how he always misplaces things at the most unfortunate moments. He pays for things using his credit card app on his phone and he never puts important cards and identifications inside his wallet.

As he rushed back, looking exasperated but relieved, I could see him waving his wallet. Then he rushed to my side and exclaimed that he had found it and there was no need to be worried. At that moment, I realized that I was so preoccupied with finding the perfect gift when the idea was right under my nose all along. I have to buy him a new wallet. Looking at his wallet in tatters gave me the idea. It was due for an upgrade and it was an opportunity I could not miss.

Now that I know what to give him, I had to think of a way to make it personal. I could just go the luxurious route and buy him something that stinks of overcompensation. But then, I realized that this could be a perfect opportunity to show how much I care by personalizing the gift. As soon as I got home, I flipped through web searches to look for services that sell personalized wallets. And the one I found was just perfect, they actually make custom leather wallets. 

The idea of a leather wallet completely slipped my mind. Any other kind of wallets would look like someone from a teenager’s pocket so I had to make sure it looked as professional as possible. I had the wallet embedded with his initials. And I picked the leather color that he liked. And to top it off, there is a barely noticeable engraving of his favorite football team’s badge on front.

Now the moment of truth has arrived and I am to give the gift to him on his birthday. It was inside a box which did not give away what was inside although I did feel a small gasp. He was probably thinking that I had give him another wrist jewelry.
