10 Fun Day Out Ideas for Your Weekends with the Kids

If you’re divorced, and restricted to just weekends with the kids, how can you make your time together really special? Here are 10 ideas to do just that…

After a divorce, you may not be able to see your kids as often as you’d like. Of course, you can continue to seek legal advice on child custody to help you to spend more time with them. That said, that may not always work out.

This is why making your weekends or days with the kids as special as possible is paramount. This can help you to form strong bonds with them, as parent should aim to do. But how can you do this?

In this post, we’re going to help you decide what day trips and outdoor activities you can do with your kids to give them the best weekends possible. Take a look…

What Are the Best Day Out Ideas for Weekends with your Kids?

This list contains a mixture of trips, activities and general days out you can have with your kids to give you an idea of what’s out there. So, without further ado, here are our top 10 ideas for days out with your children.

1. Quad Biking

One of the best ways to explore the outdoors together, and introduce them to a new activity, is going quad biking. It doesn’t get much more fun for kids than this, and you’ll likely have a whale of a time yourself.

You could even start a little competition with each other, which will teach the kids how to lose graciously. They’ll also learn vital skills that can help them later in life when they drive a car or ride a motorbike.

2. Kayaking

In the interest of introducing your kids to all types of terrain, why not take them kayaking to test their sea legs? There are tons of places to do this across the western world, including sports centres and nature reserves.

Not only will you all have fun learning this new skill together, but your children will also learn to navigate their kayak, work together, and be safe in the water. Going through this process with them will create a strong bond between you and your kids.

3. Dinosaur Parks

If you’re not into adrenaline-filled days out, you could always take your children to a dinosaur theme park. These parks are more prevalent than you might think, and you could probably find one somewhere near where you live.

These parks usually set out a trail for the children to walk through that includes information panels, interactive exhibits and most importantly, giant dinosaur replicas for them to marvel at.

4. The Zoo

You might not be too into the idea of teaching your kids about extinct species, but thankfully there are places with living, breathing animals you can take them to.

Zoos are the epitome of a fun day out where your children can learn about animals without even trying. Depending on your level of zoology experience, you might even learn something yourself.

5. The Beach

Learning new skills and information about animals past and present is great, but sometimes you just want to go somewhere to relax that doesn’t cost a pretty penny.

Going to beach gives you the opportunity to kick back in the sand and let the kids run wild, building sandcastles and swimming in the sea. In between relaxation sessions, you could play beach volleyball, splash in the water with your kids, and build them a sandcastle worth aspiring to.

6. Adventure Trails

Somewhere between adrenaline-filled activities, relaxation and learning new things lies adventure trails.

No matter how old your children are, they’ll love this activity. You can either make up your own trail and set challenges for your kids to overcome. Or, you could visit a premade trail which can be adrenaline-based, learning based or a mixture of both.

7. A Museum

If your children show an interest in learning about something, there’s probably a museum out there for it. You can take them to natural history museums, military history museums, science museums, and specialisms within. It’s important to pick something your child has already showed interest in, because that way they’ll have more fun and they’ll learn more.

8. Paintballing

There’s no better way to work out tension in a family than to shoot them with paintballs. You can vent your frustrations with each other in one huge cathartic release that will leave you laughing and covered in paint.

It’s always nice to schedule the paintballing in the morning and go for a meal at a local restaurant afterwards. That way you can have your crazy fun experience before sitting down for a nice meal to reminisce about the war you’ve just been through.

9. Mini Cruise

If you want the big holiday experience, but only want it for a weekend, you could always take a mini cruise.

These cruises usually last 2-4 nights, so slightly longer than a traditional weekend, but you get the same experience you would on a traditional cruise. The reason this is a fun day out is because you get to see new places, be out on the open ocean, and be catered to.

10. Swimming

Outdoor swimming pools are more prevalent in hot countries, or are at least only open on sunny days in not-so-hot countries. If you find yourself in the right place at the right time, swimming is a fun day out with the kids.

Diving competitions, water polo, racing, and splash tag are just some of the games you can play together in the water. It’s also a great way to teach your kids to swim – another life lesson learned.
