Savvy consumers know that everything has a season. Buy the right thing at the right time, and you can save major money. If you’re not in a rush to replace something broken you need now, then try to plan out big-ticket buys at low points in their price cycles.

Exercise Equipment
The colder months are the best times to get fitness machines. Treadmills and other exercise equipment are often cheapest in January and sometimes into February. This is also true for bicycles when sellers markdown as much as a third or half off to clear room for new spring season models.
If fitness equipment in your home isn’t your thing and you’d rather sign up for a gym membership, wait until summer. Their lowest rates and best deals happen in June.
Furniture
The furniture industry tends to release new models twice a year, typically every February and August. That means retailers feature furniture sales in the months of January and July. Having said that, January sales usually last into the middle of February with especially steep discounts around President’s Day weekend. Overstock and IKEA have both been noted for prices slashed as much as 70 percent at that time.
Grills
Summer is the prime time for grilling, but buying a grill is best done when summer is over. Look for discounts starting around Labor Day and lasting until October. Not sure what to buy? This review of the Masterbuilt Gravity Series says it might just be the future of charcoal cooking.
Household Appliances
New models usually roll out in September and October, which is also the same time retailers mark down appliances across the board by 20 percent, with clearance models diving up to 90 percent.
Three-day holiday weekends (President’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Black Friday) are also good times for deep discounts, although the selection will be narrower. Make sure you inquire about free delivery, old appliance removal and new appliance installation; most stores include this when asked.
One exception to household appliances in the fall would be refrigerators, which are cheaper in May due to their model cycle. Memorial Day capitalizes on the discount even further.
A Few Pointers
Sales discounts can sometimes last for a month or two after the listed “best times”. However, the biggest discounts often come when inventory is the lowest so the selection is narrow.
Clearance sales happen sporadically any time of year, especially when larger items eat up a lot of floor space. Always keep your eyes out for a great sale.
