I attended an advanced screening for my review. All opinions are my own.
“ALADDIN is the exciting tale of the charming street rat ALADDIN, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, the film is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s ALADDIN.
ALADDIN stars Will Smith as the larger-than-life Genie; Mena Massoud as the charming scoundrel ALADDIN; Naomi Scott as Jasmine, the beautiful, self-determined princess; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, the powerful sorcerer; Navid Negahban as the Sultan concerned with his daughter’s future; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s free-spirited best friend and confidante; Billy Magnussen as the handsome and arrogant suitor Prince Anders; and Numan Acar as Hakim, Jafar’s right-hand man and captain of the palace guards. The film is produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich with Marc Platt and Kevin De La Noy serving as executive producers. Alan Menken provides the score, which includes new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and lyricists Howard Ashman and Tim Rice and two new songs written by Menken and songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The film, which was shot on practical stages in London and on location amidst the stunning desert vistas of Jordan, has a talented creative team helping to bring Agrabah to life, including: director of photography Alan Stewart, production designer Gemma Jackson and costume designer Michael Wilkinson.”-©Disney
I have been pretty excited to see the new live action Disney’s ALADDIN. I have been impressed with the trailers. I really enjoyed watching ALADDIN.
I loved the look of the film. The visual effects were done pretty well. What I loved most were the scenery and the costumes. I loved the new, updated look on the outfits from the animated film. Jasmine’s dresses were so pretty!
I thought the cast did great. I really liked Mena Massoud as Aladdin. You could tell he was having so much fun in this role. Naomi Scott was perfect as Jasmine. She portrayed Jasmine as a very strong, independent princess. Her singing was fantastic as well. I thought Mena and Naomi had great chemistry together.
I thought Will Smith did great as Genie. I think it is really hard and almost not fair to compare him to Robin Williams because Williams’ performance is so loved. Will Smith performed a different take on the Genie while still honoring and respecting Robin Williams’ performance as well.
ALADDIN is rated PG “for some action/peril.” I took my almost 4 year old to the movie with me. She sat through it very well. There were a few things that scared her but she was okay. I think ALADDIN would be a perfect movie for the whole family to see together.
My daughter and I loved ALADDIN. It is not as good as the original animated classic but it is still a very fun movie. My family will definitely be seeing it again and owning it in our home when it becomes available.
ALADDIN gets bragging rights!
