4 Natural Ways to Keep Skin Healthy

This is a sponsored guest post.

The skin is the body’s largest organ, so it’s important to take care of it. Drinking plenty of water will help flush toxins out of your system to keep it looking clear and youthful. Also, these natural methods of caring for it will also help your skin to be healthy and glow.

Use Sun Protection

Along with applying natural sunscreen to bare skin 20 minutes before going out into the sun, you should wear a wide brim hat to shade your face if you’re going to be directly in it. If you’re at the beach or a park, put up an umbrella or select an area with trees, so you’ll have shade.

Also, avoid going out in the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest during the day. Protecting yourself from the sun will prevent sunburns and dry skin, but it can also prevent skin cancer.

Skin cancer can be difficult to detect until it has spread but protecting yourself can prevent it.

Be Kind to Skin

The sebum, which is the natural oil that keeps skin and hair moisturized, can be lost by bathing. When bathing or showering, the water shouldn’t be too hot, nor should you take too long under the water. Hot water can strip oils from skin and cause it to be dry and itchy.

Also, use a mild soap or body wash to avoid removing sebum from the skin. Within minutes of bathing, use a good moisturizer, such as one that contains natural oils, like jojoba oil, to lock in moisture. You can use jojoba oil on a daily basis to keep skin soft and healthy.

Eat Healthy Foods

One of the most natural things you can do to protect your skin is to eat organically grown foods. The nutrients in grains, lean protein, fresh fruits, and vegetables promote healthy skin. By eating oily fish and reducing the consumption of processed foods, your skin may look younger as well.

The antioxidants in fresh produce, along with drinks like green tea, can help ward off free radicals that can harm and make skin look older. Also, breaking unhealthy habits, like excessive alcohol consumption can preserve your skin as well.

Manage Stress Levels

It is difficult to avoid all stress but trying to manage it can make your skin healthier. When your stress levels are high, your body reacts to it by releasing more cortisol, the stress hormone. Cortisol can trigger the release of excess oil from your skin, which can cause acne breakouts.

If you already have a skin condition, like psoriasis, eczema or rosacea, being under stress can cause those conditions to worsen. It can cause flare-ups in the form of hives, rashes, and sometimes fever blisters.

Try yoga or meditation to lower stress levels and try to avoid as much stress as possible.

Chemical treatments and an endless supply of products are not necessary to have healthy skin. By taking care of it naturally, your skin can maintain its youthful glow into your later years. Treating your skin well will also have benefits for the rest of your body.
