Whether you are visiting the capital of Texas, or you call it home, you will find plenty of fun things to do for a fun-filled weekend in Austin. From dining to entertainment, shopping, or even just sight-seeing, the city is packed with activities for people of all walks of life. Here are just a few of the things you should try out the next time you are spending a weekend in Austin.
Starting off the Day with Breakfast
To start off your weekend, you’ll want to grab breakfast from one of the ubiquitous food trucks. Offering a wide variety of cuisines, Austin’s food trucks can provide a breakfast that is both delicious and affordable. Many visitors prefer to sample the breakfast tacos from one of the Tex-Mex themed trucks.
If a food truck isn’t your style, you could always check out one of the upscale restaurants in the downtown area. If you are planning on dining downtown, keep in mind that Austin traffic can be pretty bad, but the good news is the layout of the downtown area is very friendly to foot traffic. So park the car for the day and prepare to spend some time taking in the scene on foot.
Window Shopping
After eating, you might want to take some time checking out the wide selection of shops. Especially in the South Congress Avenue section of the city, you will find a stunning selection of shops, boutiques, and cafés. Whether you’re looking to purchase something or just browsing, you will find something to suit your tastes.
Relax At the Spa
Take some time for yourself and enjoy your trip even more. Austin has a few upscale day spas where they will pamper you in style. One of the best spas is Viva Day Spa which has several locations within Austin. Try their Vivafy Spa Package which lasts for three hours and includes 75-minute massage, 90-minute custom facials, microdermabrasion, tea, and chocolates.
Top Notch Museums
In the afternoon, you might want to consider visiting one of Austin’s many museums. Whether you are interested in an outdoor sculpture collection, a cultured art museum, or something a little different such as a museum with an emphasis on dinosaurs and fossils (that would be the Texas Memorial Museum), you will find something interesting in Austin.
Even better, many of the museums offer discounted admissions to students, senior citizens, and members of the military. Others are free altogether, meaning that you can spend the afternoon learning and exploring at very little cost.
Hit the Nightlife
After dinner at one of Austin’s nationally-known barbecue joints, you might be looking for a way to spend the evening. If you like going to dive bars and catching fledgling bands, you’ll find everything you’re looking for in a little area to the north of downtown Austin.
Known as “Dirty Sixth,” this part of Sixth Street that runs between I-35 and Congress Avenue is home to all sorts of interesting night spots. Be sure to plan ahead and designate a driver or arrange for transportation, as you’ll find some of the craft beers on tap to be irresistible.
If dive bars aren’t your thing, consider visiting one of the arthouse movie theaters. Showing films that aren’t always playing in the megaplexes, these theaters offer a chance to enjoy something different.
Once your evening is done, head to one of Austin’s quaint bed and breakfasts for a nap, and then get up the next day for a brunch before heading out for another day of fun and adventure!
