I knew from a young age that I wanted to be a mother. I guess you could say it was just in me to be a mom. Once I got married to my husband I looked forward to becoming a mom and looked forward to starting a family with him. Since I had little brothers and sisters, as well as a couple of nephews, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what motherhood would be like.
Boy did I have no idea at all! Motherhood is the best thing that has ever happened to me, but it has also provided some of the worst moments that have happened to me. Hang on, don’t get offended yet, or start judging me as a mom. Let me explain.
The Best Thing: My kids are my world. I can’t even imagine my life without them. From the minute they were placed in my arms for the first time my life changed for the better. They are beautiful, sweet, and amaze me everyday. They teach me so much about the world, life, and about myself. They really are the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Some of the Worst Things: Until I became a mom I was never slapped in the face for helping someone put their clothes on, or punched in the eye for giving someone their meal. The abuse you get as a mom is real. It isn’t fun. (But at least they are the best thing that ever happened to me so that makes all the abuse worth it.) But, some of the worst things that have happened to me have been done by my kids. Let me share a story about my daughter that happened about a month ago, to paint a picture of my life with a toddler for you.
I was blissfully asleep one morning when all of the sudden I was awoken in the worst way possible. Smacked in the face with an unidentified object! I jolted up, opening my eyes to see my adorable toddler staring at me. She saw she had hurt me and immediately shoved the unidentified object that was used to wake me underneath my pillow. I reached under the pillow to see what she had used to wake me in such a horrible way, thinking it was a stuffed animal toy or something similar. It was a clear full soggy diaper! She had removed her diaper, and thought ‘I should hit mom in the face with this to wake her up, so she can put a new diaper on me.’ I quickly look and see she has no diaper on. How did I not notice that before? Anyway, that is probably the worst way I have even been woken up and hopefully it will hold that record. The only thing worse would have been a diaper filled with other substances. Thank God it was just pee!
What I have learned from times like these (where mom is a punching bag, sometimes literally) is to find humor in it. I now think back on that diaper to the face incident and I laugh. It is hilarious to me now. So I love when I find other moms who share in finding humor and making me laugh about motherhood.
