We all know that making mistakes is how we learn. Encourage your child to try their best at what you’re teaching them, and try something if it’s for the first time. After all, it’s okay not to be perfect, and this is an important life lesson that can be taught at home.
3. Think Bigger Picture
It’s exciting when your child does well and slightly disappointing when they don’t. However, this isn’t the end of the world, and as we mentioned above, it’s okay to make mistakes.
One bad grade isn’t going to determine whether your child is successful or not in the future. Try to focus on what you’re hoping your child will learn from at-home teaching that they can carry with them throughout their lives, not the small mistakes they’re making in the moment.
4. Limit Memorization
Rote learning is helpful in certain situations, but a lot of the time, it’s better for your child to learn how to find the answer to something, as opposed to just knowing it.
With a wealth of information available online, our children should be learning how to research a topic, lookup an index, or even talk to somebody on the phone.
5. Let Them Talk
When you’re teaching your child how to do something, naturally, you’re going to want them to listen to your instructions – and there’s nothing wrong with this.
However, there should also be a time and place where your child can talk, too. An essential life skill for your child to learn is to be able to relate to all kinds of different people, so the more they feel they can articulate themselves, the better they’ll be at this.
