Children are one of the greatest joys that anyone can have in their lives.
But, when it comes to adult-based issues such as divorce and separation, many parents worry about the impact that this will have on their children.
From the time they are babies, children can sense when there is tension. This can lead to a baby that cannot settle and may not hit developmental milestones. And, if you and your partner are staying together for the kids but are miserable, it is likely to be counter-productive and will probably cause your children to be anxious.
Even with two homes to go to, children can be happy and can thrive, provided that you and your co-parent have the following elements in place.
Love and Affection
You and your former spouse love your child or children but you may feel that by separating, your child may now feel that you don’t care for them anymore.
Don’t worry! It is easy to show love and affection to a child! Give them lots of hugs, kisses, and positive affirmations, spend quality time together and take an interest in their interests.
You can also show affection by interacting with them; for example, by reading to them, playing music with them, and generally giving them a strong mother and father figure. For more guidance on other ways to express your love for your children, head to twohealthyhomes.com.
Consistency and Structure
Chaos is not fun for adults or for children; and while children will usually grunt or moan when it is time to go to bed at 8pm, keeping a structure in place is key for children to thrive.
Sit down with your partner or your co-parent and discuss structure. If you are not in a relationship with your child’s other parent, try to make sure that you and they are on the same page about areas such as when your child gets up in the morning, when they go to bed, the rules they have to follow in both households, and so on.
Positive Role Models
As their parents, you and your former spouse hold the role of being the first role models in your children’s lives. So, aim to be the best role model you can.
This doesn’t mean being happy all the time or working non-stop; it means finding an ideal balance, being there for your children, attending football matches that they play in, going to art fairs with them, and so on. This will help them to feel supported and loved and will help them to thrive.
Opportunities for Learning and Exploration
Children are naturally curious, and, as their parents, it is your role to invest in their curiosity. If they want to learn about dinosaurs, take them to your local history museum; if they are interested in playing an instrument, invest in lessons for them, or set them up with tutorials online. And of course, the best way for kids to learn is to play, so teach them via playing!
Good Physical and Emotional Health
There is a reason why neglect in children is met with such horror. It stunts their ability to grow in more ways than one.
Ensuring your child is physically healthy will involve ensuring that they are eating the right food, and taking them to the doctor, the dentist, and all other health-based appointments. Aim to have open communication with your child to foster good emotional health and, if you have concerns, seek help.
