I attended an advanced screening of this film.  All opinions are my own.

 

“A heroic action-thriller, “The Finest Hours” is the remarkable true story of the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history.  On February 18, 1952, a massive nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and wreaking havoc on the ships caught in its deadly path, including the SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound for Boston, which was literally ripped in half, trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly-sinking stern. As the senior officer on board, first assistant engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) soon realizes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and inspire the men to set aside their differences and work together to ride out one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast. Meanwhile, as word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts, Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders a daring operation to rescue the stranded men. Despite overwhelming odds, four men, led by Coast Guard Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and little, if any, means of navigation, facing frigid temperatures, 60-foot high waves and hurricane-force winds.”- Disney

I have been excited to see the new Disney film, The Finest Hours.  I thought it looked like a great, intense action film.  Although it was not as action packed as I was expecting, my husband and I enjoyed the film.

There were a lot of positive things about this movie.  The acting is great all around.  Chris Pine and Casey Affleck definitely stand out as the two main roles in the film.  I also really enjoyed the story line of the movie.  It has a lot of intense moments but I liked that it also focused on the lives of the characters, especially Chris Pine’s character Bernie and his girlfriend, Miriam, played by Holliday Grainger.

The movie also had some cool visuals and special effects, especially the rescue boat scenes in the ocean.  I saw the movie in 3D but do not feel that this movie is necessary to see in 3D.

The only complaint I have about the movie is that I thought it started out slow.  It took me awhile to really feel emotionally invested in the film.  The last half of the movie definitely seems to move faster than the first half.

The movie is rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of peril.”  I think it is a pretty mellow PG-13 film though.  It would be better to leave the little kids at home though.  They will have a hard time sitting through this movie.  The Finest Hours is a Disney movie that is more for the adults.

I liked The Finest Hours and think it is worth watching.
