The holidays can be such a fun time filled with great food, and memories made with friends and family. But don’t forget about your dog or dogs. If you are like me, then your dogs are part of the family, but the holidays can get so busy that we can forget about the needs of our furry babies. So I have put together some helpful tips to make sure your dog feels included in all the fun and festivities this Thanksgiving holiday season.
Give Your Dog Extra Special Attention- Before your guests arrive, take the time to make your dog feel loved. Give them lots of cuddles and pet them. Take them for a walk to get their energy out, play fetch, etc…this should help them to feel less needy as guests arrive and help with their behavior. You can also take little breaks to comfort and love your dog during the festivities, reminding them that you are there for them and everything will return to normal afterwards.
Have Special Treats For Your Dog- Dog treats are always a favorite with my pups since they are exactly that, a treat that they don’t get all the time. You can make Thanksgiving day a great time for your dog by giving them special treats. Also, check out this dog food for Yorkies. Getting specific food for your particular dog breed is important. Specific dog food for Yorkies will give your pup the best nutrients. It will also ensure they have energy all throughout the day!
Another go to for me is wet dog food, I don’t feed it to my dogs all the time so it is an extra special and very delicious treat for them. My dogs love Beneful Wet Dog Food and I have to say I am super impressed with the quality of it. Other wet dog food looks like a big chunk of brown. But with Beneful Wet Dog Food, I can actually see the meat and the veggies. And my dogs go crazy for it.
Another tip, It can be a good idea to feed them before you eat so they will feel full and be less likely to beg. Remember, they will be smelling all the delicious food you are making so be understanding if they are excited about that.
Be Patient With Your Dog- Remember that the holidays can be a stressful time for a dog since there are usually a lot of people coming to your home. The doorbell, the new people, all the smells, it can overwhelm a pup. So be patient and remember that they are feeling stresses. Do what you can to help them remain calm rather than just getting mad at them and telling them to stop.
Remind Your Guests To Be Patient As Well- Sometimes other people aren’t as understanding with your dog. Remind your guests that it can be a stressful time for your dog as all the people come and go from your home. Ask for them to be a little more understanding and show them ways they can help your dog to be calm and relax.
Let Your Dog Be A Part of The Celebration- Rather than just whisking your furry friend away to another room during the festivities, try to include them instead. It might take a little more patients (see #2 & #3) but it will help your dog to feel included and loved, rather than shut away. Your dog won’t realize why it’s being shut away in a room. So give it a chance before you resort to that.
I hope these tips help you and your furr baby have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Do you have any tips or ideas to help include your pooch in Thanksgiving? I would love to hear them, leave your thoughts in the comments below this post.
And I hope you and your dog have a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving!
